General-purpose protective gloves represent the largest share of all personal protective equipment (PPE) sold and are designed to protect users from a wide range of hazards. To help wearers select the correct gloves, several European safety standards— including EN 388:2016+A1:2018—have been established. These standards define the levels of protection against various risks, allowing users to choose suitable gloves based on the hazards identified for a specific task. They outline the requirements, test methods, marking, and user information for protective gloves intended to guard against mechanical risks such as abrasion, blade cuts, tearing, punctures, and, where relevant, impact.
